Potential of The airport
- Based on statistical data by MAHB (for 2010), more than 4 million passengers through or used this airport. The location of the airport, nearer to the northern - part of Sumatra, Tourist destinations such as Phuket, Langkawi, Ko Sa Mui (suspended by FY) and nearer to the Business and Capital cities, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
- The population of Penang is about 800, 000 (excluding area nearer of the southern part of Kedah). Most International flights are from Taipei, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Taipei. For my views, the airport has the potentially to attract more flights from Northeastern of Asia, since some Japanese companies here in Kulim and Penang. Previously, there were flights to Seoul and Tokyo served by Korean Air and Japan Airlines, but suspended due to low yield. But, I believe, the route has potentially to re - open but must be right capacity and aircrafts.
- In Penang also, the were Malaysia -Indians and workers from Southern Airport, Thus, Penang airport has potentially to open flights to Southern part of Indian cities such as Madras/Chennai; Hyderabad, Cochin, Trivandrum; Colombo in Sri Lanka; Dhaka or Chittagong in Bangladesh.
- If sufficient passengers from Middle East, the Airport may also open to high density routes to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha. What about routes to European cities? hmm.. well.. depends on the demand. The airport may also open / add more connections to some destinations especially in Indonesia and also in Eastern Malaysia.
- Penang airport is also one of the cargo - freight hub in Malaysia. Moreover, the airport itself located near Penang Port in Seberang Perai. MASKargo, a sub - unit of Malaysia Airlines, has opened It's terminal kargo. Other Cargo/Freight Airlines serve from the airport are DHL (operated by AirHong Kong, Cathay Pacific Cargo, Asiana Cargo, China Airlines Cargo, Eva Air Cargo, FedEX, Korean Air Cargo, TNT, Singapore Airlines. Hong Kong Airlines, Lufthansa Cargo, Transmile and UPS.
