Operation
Since the aircraft has capabilities to fly in the longer range of 12, 779 km and less capacities as compared to Boeing 747 - 400, the airlines employed the aircraft mainly for medium and long - haul routes especially to Australian, New Zealand, Secondary European cities and high density routes. The aircrafts were previously served to Vienna, Zurich, Manchester, Stockholm (also to Newark), Rome and etc. Initially, the aircrafts were fitted three cabin classes (First, Business and Economy). Due to low demand, the Malaysia Airlines' management decided to refit its to two cabin classes (282 seats). Since last year, the aircrafts' function has been reduced and replaced with latest Airbus 330 - 300s (to be specifically - 323X) which have same cabin classes with extra of one seat (283). Currently, the aircrafts operate routes several cities in Europe (Amsterdam and Frankfurt), Tokyo - Narita (also to Los Angeles), Istanbul, Denpasar - Bali, Auckland, Shanghai, Jeddah, Dubai, Beijing, Dhaka, Delhi, Mumbai and etc. The aircrafts are also use during peak season (school holiday) especially to Kota Kinabalu.

Future
Since the aircrafts operation have been replace by Airbus 330 - 300, the airlines management has phased out 2 of 17 aircrafts. In addition, Ahmad Jauhari told to press that the airlines will phase out the aircrafts starting 2016 due to several factors such as cost, fuel efficient and so on. He also added that, Malaysia Airlines may reduce types of aircraft and standardize (in order to reduce operational cost) if Airbus produce longer - range of Airbus 330 - 300 which has announced during previous Paris Air Show. However, Airbus Industry is focusing with its new latest product Airbus 350 XWB which has comparable capacity with Boeing 777 - 200 ER and offers better fuel efficient & flying longer range. A350 XWB (specifically -800) is good option for Malaysia Airlines to replace its Boeing 777 - 200 ER. Since the aircrafts phasing out in 2016, the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 - 200 ERs' current cabin are already looks old, unattractive with colour of seats and IFE. Thus, Malaysia Airlines need to refurbish the cabin by installing with fresh cabin seats and better IFE.
